A veteran educator is concerned that students are passing through primary and secondary school without grasping basic reading skills.
Founder of the Babb’s Reading Clinic, Dr. Astra Babb talked about the worrying situation, while addressing the closing ceremony of the 2024 edition of her Summer Clinic for males experiencing reading challenges.
Dr. Babb says it’s worrying that children demonstrating severe reading deficits are being promoted.
She says this is evident as third and fourth form students, who attended the recently concluded Summer Clinic, struggled with deciphering three and four letter words.
Declaring that she believes educators should return to the business of teaching reading, Dr. Babb says following intense sessions, many of the boys are now reading at higher levels.
However, she says, the group of students needs much more work in answering comprehension questions at all levels.
