Barbados now a hub for SIDS

May 21, 2024

Barbados is now the new global hub for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), Gerd Muller and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kerrie Symmonds have signed an agreement at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre just ahead of the 4th International UN SIDS Conference in Antigua.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley notes the signing signals an important development for the country as the capacity to diversify economies is critical.

She adds this partnership will allow for the building out of new industries within the domestic markets, as well as work with outside investors to extend to the entire Latin America and Caribbean.

Already UNIDO has named one of its officers, Stein Hansen, to lead the office in Barbados. He was previously posted here as the second in charge at the United Nations Development Programme about 20 years ago.

Meanwhile, Director General Muller says an agreement has been reached on some important sectors, not only for Barbados but for all SIDS.
