Windies lose to England in Super 8s opener

June 20, 2024

West Indies are off to a less than ideal start in the Super Eights stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, going down to England by eight wickets last night at the Daren Sammy Cricket Stadium in St. Lucia.

The Windies were sent into bat in their Group 2 fixture, and scored 180 for 4 off their 20 overs.

Johnson Charles topscored with 38, while Captain Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran added 36 each.

It was Powell who gave the run rate a push, as his 36 came off just 17 deliveries, inclusive of 5-sixes.

England in reply raced to 181 for 2 off 17.3 overs, as the Windies lost by eight wickets.

Player of the Match Phil Salt was unbeaten on 87 off 47 deliveries, and struck 7-fours and 5-sixes, while Jonny Bairstow was unbeaten on 48.

Salt and Bairstow had an unbroken 3rd wicket stand of 97.

That was the first loss for the Windies in their last nine T20 internationals.

There’s a double header on today – Afghanistan take on India at Kensington Oval from 10:30 a.m. and then Australia face Bangladesh from 8:30 p.m. in Antigua.

Both games will be live on MCTV’s ESPN 308 and radio 94.7FM.
