Stunning 9-wicket victory for WI over USA

June 22, 2024

A blistering knock by Shai Hope powered West Indies to a stunning nine-wicket win over USA in their T20 World Cup Super 8 match at Kensington Oval last night.

Chasing 129 and despite losing the wicket of Johnson Charles for 15, West Indies chased down the target in just 10.5 overs on 130 for one.

Hope smashed 82 runs off 39 balls while Nicholas Pooran scored 27.

Earlier, Roston Chase and Andre Russell claimed three wickets each as West Indies bundled out the Americans for 128.

The result puts the West Indies in second place in Group 2 on two points, the same as England, but the Windies have a superior net run rate.

Tomorrow’s fixtures, which will determine the two qualifiers from the group for the semi-finals, will see England taking on USA at Kensington Oval at 10:30 a.m., and the Windies against leaders South Africa in Antigua at 8:30 p.m.

Both matches will be live on MCTV’s ESPN channel 308 and also on radio 94.7FM.

Meantime, India maintained their unbeaten streak at the World Cup, with a clinical 50-run win over Bangladesh in Antigua this afternoon.

Invited to bat first, India posted 196 for five, thanks to Player of the Match Hardik Pandya’s 50 not out off 27 balls.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with two for 32.

India maintained their dominance in the second innings as well, restricting Bangladesh to 146 for eight.

Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah had two.

India are first in Group one on four points.

If Australia beat Afghanistan later tonight, then they and India will progress to the semi-finals, but a surprise win for Afghanistan would keep all four sides in contention.

That Australia-Afghanistan match is at 8:30 p.m., live on channel 308 and radio 94.7FM.

CBC’s nightly World Cup analysis show – ‘The Final Over’ – will be at 8:03 p.m. on TV8, when our guest will be cricket analyst and Coach Jamal Smith.
