Matthews’ heroics lead Royals past Warriors

Haley Matthews played a captain’s innings, as she led defending champions Barbados Royals Women to victory in the opening match of the 2024 Women’s Caribbean Premier League last night.

Playing at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad, Matthews won the toss, sent the Guyana Amazon Warriors Women into bat, and restricted them to 118 for 9 off their 20 overs. Stafanie Taylor topscored with 38.

Aaliyah Alleyne took 3 for 21, Qiana Joseph 2 for 14, while both Matthews and Amanda-Jade Wellington had 2 for 19.

The Royals Women in reply took the match right down to the wire, getting home by one wicket, as they scored 119 for 9 with only one ball to spare. Player of the match Matthews batted through the innings for 61 not-out, which included seven fours. Shabnim Ismail ended with 4 for 16.
