Major sports omitted from 2026 Commonwealth Games

October 22, 2024

Several Barbadian athletes will not get to participate in the next Commonwealth Games.

A scaled-back Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the next two years will feature just 10 events, with several prominent sports being omitted.

Games organisers confirmed the event list for the 2026 event today, which will be held in Scotland from July 23 to August 2.

The cut disciplines Barbados athletes have been training for in hope of qualification include badminton, beach volleyball, cricket, road cycling, hockey, rugby sevens, squash, table tennis, and triathlon.

Organisers have said the want for a financially sustainable event, developed in a short timeframe, was a catalyst for the trimmed-down programme.

The future of the Commonwealth Games was thrown into disarray in July last year, when the Australian city of Victoria axed the event, citing financial constraints.

Glasgow stepped in to host the Games, and earmarked early on its ambition to have a trimmed-down version of the event.
