ICC probing why USA leg of T20 World Cup overshot budget

July 17, 2024

The International Cricket Council will be launching an investigation into why the USA leg of the recently concluded Men’s T20 World Cup ran way over budget.

16 of the 55 World Cup matches were hosted in the US now the ICC Board, which meets this weekend in Colombo, will zoom in on claims that the costs of the US leg significantly overshot the original budget; on why that might have been the case; and who should be held responsible for it.

According to one board director, the ICC board had initially approved a budget in the range of 40-50 million us dollars for the USA leg of the tournament.

However, on the eve of the World Cup, T20 World Cup USA Inc, sent in a request for an additional 20 million dollars.

Several directors expressed reservations about the inflated expenditure leading to the request for the loan, among them Cricket West Indies President Dr. Kishore Shallow.

Other heads of full member boards also had their concerns.

The CWI were the main hosts of the T20 World Cup, after the ICC had stripped USA Cricket of its powers to be the co-host, due to the board being mired in governance and finance issues.

That meant that T20 World Cup USA Inc. effectively became the local organising committee for the USA leg.

The new company was registered as a not-for-profit company and is independent of the ICC.

India won the World Cup, defeating South Africa in the final at Kensington Oval.
