Choppy sea conditions along the coastlines of Barbados and in open water are expected from tonight, Monday, December 2, and conditions are expected to peak on Tuesday, December 3, into Wednesday, December 4, with some improvement likely on Thursday, December 5 2024.
The Small Craft Advisory has been upgraded to a warning. A high-Surf Advisory remains in effect.
Small craft operators and beachgoers should be prepared for the possibility of large open water swells can be hazardous to some vessels; operation of smaller vessels can be difficult at times due to large swells and the possible loss of life or injury.
The public should ensure a lifeguard is or will be on duty stay within a safe distance of shoreline and lifeguard station and avoid going into water where
possible. Marine vessels incapable of withstanding these magnitudes should remain close to sheltered waters or safe harbours. Marine users are encouraged to monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further information on what to do.
The north Atlantic high pressure system is generating wind speeds of 20 to 25 knots in the Atlantic. As a result, an increase in swell heights is expected around Barbados from the night of Monday, December 2, 2024. These choppy conditions are expected to peak on Tuesday 3 into Wednesday, December 4, 2024. Sea conditions are forecast to be rough in open water with easterly swells ranging from 2.5m to 3.5m (8 to 11 ft) in open water. Conditions are expected to improve on the night of Thursday, December 5, 2024.
A small-craft warning is issued when sustained winds of 25 to 33 knots and/or sea swells greater than 3 metres (greater than 10 feet) and/or reduced visibility (less than 5 km) are affecting or forecast to affect the marine area within the next 36 hours. A High Surf Advisory is issued when breaking wave action poses or is forecast to pose a threat to life and property within the surf zone during the next 36 hours.
