Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for Barbados

The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Barbados, in addition to extending the Flash Flood Watch.

The Met Office warned the public that “lighting activity at or near your location could result in power outages if lighting strikes power utility infrastructure. Persons are reminded that lightning strikes can be life-threatening.”

The public is encouraged to monitor the BMS, DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further updates.

Unstable conditions associated with a tropical wave is generating significant thunderstorm activity. This activity is expected to affect the island throughout the early portion of the night.

A severe-thunderstorm watch is issued when significant lightning activity is possible within the watch area (generally within 6 hours). This watch was issued at 8:45 p.m. today and will be updated at midnight, Monday, August 5, 2024.

Meanwhile there is a medium possibility of significant flooding which may result in possible moderate to significant:

-Runoff from higher elevations

-Water settlements on roads and fields at the foot of hills and coastal roads

-Adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies

-Delays on traffic routes with some roads becoming impassable.

Residents and visitors should also be aware that this Flash Flood Watch alert level could elevate to red.

A flash-flood watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible. This Flash Flood Watch was issued at 6 p.m. today and will be terminated at 6 a.m. tomorrow, Monday, August 5, 2024, or sooner if conditions warrant
