Overnight Flash-Flood Watch

September 1, 2024

The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Flash-Flood Watch for Barbados overnight.

This as bursts of intense rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the night are likely to generate flooding in low-lying areas of the island.

Take note of the following possible possible moderate to significant impacts:

-Soil erosion on bared or scarred land surfaces

-Water settlements on roads and fields

-Increases in water levels of existing water bodies (e.g ponds etc.)

-Objects or debris from higher elevations becoming embedded within fast-moving water flows.

The public should follow recommendations from the Department of Emergency Management.

Unstable conditions associated with the tropical wave will occasionally produce intense bursts of rainfall and thunderstorm activity across the island throughout tonight. This activity is likely to produce rainfall accumulations between 25 mm and 75 mm which may lead to flooding in low-lying areas of the island. Therefore the Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Flash-Flood Watch.

A flash-flood watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.

This Flash-Flood Watch was issued at 9:30 p.m. on September 1, 2024, and will be updated/terminated at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, September 2, 2024, or sooner if conditions warrant.
