Flash Flood Watch in effect for southwestern districts

August 1, 2024

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for southwestern districts of Barbados.

The Met Office says excessive rainfall throughout the afternoon could generate flooding in the vicinity of Christ Church, St. Michael, St. James and surrounding areas.

A Flash Flood Watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area.

It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.

Across the southwestern districts, moderate to heavy showers could produce up to 50mm of rainfall during the afternoon.

As a result of daytime heating and the current light winds allowing cloud development over the island.

Rainfall intensities are expected to peak during the afternoon and conditions will improve during the late evening.

Possible Impacts
There is a medium possibility of significant flooding which may result in:

Soil erosion on bared or scarred land surfaces.

Water settlements on roads and fields may lead to isolated diversions.

Increases in water levels of existing water bodies (e.g. ponds etc.).

Residents and visitors should also be aware that this alert level could elevate to red.

the public is encouraged to monitor official sources for updates.

This Flash-Flood Watch will be terminated at 6:00 pm today or sooner if conditions warrant.
