Severe lightning activity today, Wednesday, October 2, 2024, is expected across central, western, and southern districts of Barbados. Therefore, the Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. These conditions are predicted to peak this afternoon with some improvement tonight.
Light winds, strong daytime heating, and available moisture are generating thunderstorms and localized activity across some districts of Barbados. Mostly cloudy with breaks of sunshine, scattered heavy to intense showers, and scattered thunderstorms are forecast with rainfall accumulation of 40 to 75 mm.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued when significant lightning activity is possible within the watch area (generally within 6 hours).
Take note of the following possible impacts: -Lighting activity at or near your location could result in power outages if lighting strikes power utility infrastructure -Persons are reminded that lightning strikes can be life-threatening.
The public is encouraged to monitor the DEM and GIS websites and their respective social media pages along with the local media networks for further information on what you should do.
This Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued at 1:00 p.m. and will be updated/terminated at 6:00 p.m. or sooner if conditions warrant.
