Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith has announced that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Force has launched an Illegal Gun Retrieval campaign to round up about 1,000 guns during the rest of the year, and it has partnered with Crime Stoppers and other organisations to achieve that goal.
In the first eight months of 2021, the TTPS seized approximately 500 firearms from across the country, including 53 high-powered rifles.
Speaking during a media briefing, Commissioner Griffith said while law enforcement officials have held between 800 and 1,000 firearms annually for the last 20 years, 80 per cent of murders were currently still being committed using guns.
He said there are currently 35,000 illegal firearms in the country.
