CRFM: More comprehensive policy & legislation needed

October 3, 2024

The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism says more comprehensive policy and legislation are required in dealing with the influx of sargassum seaweed, as well as intended solutions.

Executive Director, Milton Haughton says the organisation is cognisant of the presence of national frameworks regulating the harvesting of marine algae and plants, noting the seaweed’s use must be guided by science.

He wants countries to pay attention to the protection of public health and that of the marine eco-system.
