UN General Assembly opens 78th session

The United Nations General Assembly opened its 78th session in New York City, with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres telling world leaders democracy is under threat and inequalities are growing.

The session is the first fully in-person meeting since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley is leading the island’s delegation.

Of the 193 U.N. Member Countries, 145 nations are sending their Heads of State or Government to the General Assembly.

Mr. Guterres says in the face of the mounting crisis, the global humanitarian system is on the verge of collapse.

Mr. Guterres spoke of the impact Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is having on the world and risks of countries splitting up in Africa.

He adds old tensions are festering as new risks emerge.

Prime Minister Mottley is among six Caribbean Leaders slated to address the U.N. General Assembly on Friday.
