Tropical wave ‘likely to develop into tropical storm’

June 27, 2024

The Barbados Meteorological Services says the tropical wave, currently located along 36W or 1600 miles/2600 km from the island, is likely to develop into a tropical storm over the next few days.

In its latest update, the BMS says while there are currently no watches or warnings in effect for Barbados, by Saturday a Tropical Storm Watch as well as marine advisories may be issued.

The wave is expected to move westward at 15 to 20 mph over the next few days. Due to the size of the system, the BMS says there is some uncertainty in the forecast intensity. However, environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for slow development.

The system is expected to affect Barbados late Sunday night into Monday, and there is a possibility of flash flooding and storm-force winds impacting the island during that time. Numerical weather models continue to track the centre of the system just south of Barbados early on Monday.

Additionally, sea conditions may become hazardous from as early as Sunday and Small Craft and High Surf Warnings may be issued for Barbados during the weekend.

The public is encouraged to monitor official sources for further updates over the coming days.
