The Caribbean Export Development Agency has encouraged Barbados and the Caribbean to embrace modern techniques in agriculture as farming should no longer be limited to rural areas.
Executive Director Dr. Damie Sinanan has cited hydroponics and vertical farming as among the examples for states to consider.
He says farming must be brought into the urban areas.
Dr. Sinanan was on the panel for the virtual island summit organised by Island Innovation.
The topic discussed was overcoming island challenges: food production through sustainable agriculture was discussed.
Dr. Sinanan also advised the region to invest in agroecology.
That is sustainable farming that works with nature.
Agroecology also involves the application of ecological concepts and principles in farming.
