Small Craft Advisory issued

October 25, 2024

The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Small Craft Advisory for Barbados.

A Small Craft Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots and/or sea swells of 2.5 to 3.0 metres (8 to 10 feet) and/or reduced visibility (less than 10 km but greater than 5 km) are affecting or forecast to affect the marine area within the next 36 hours.

In a release, the BMS says a sea surface drone east of Barbados has measured swells of 2.5 to 3.0 metres. These conditions are currently peaking with some improvement expected tomorrow.

Small craft operators and beachgoers should be prepared for the possibility of large open water swells which can be hazardous to some vessels. Operation of smaller vessels can be difficult at times due to large swells.

Meanwhile, another BMS sea surface drone just off the west coast of Barbados has been measuring surface currents of 3 to 4 km/h.

Sea bathers and small craft operators should exercise caution as there may be relatively strong currents near the western and southern shorelines of the island. Sea conditions are forecast to be moderate to rough in open water with easterly swells ranging from 2.5 to 3 metres during this
swell event.

Marine users are encouraged to monitor official sources for further updates and information, and if going into the water, sea bathers should only use beaches with on-duty lifeguards.

This advisory will be updated at noon.
