Significant reduction in cervical cancer between 2013 & 2018

September 12, 2024

Research conducted by the Barbados National Registry shows a significant reduction in cervical cancer between 2013 and 2018.

According to Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Wellness Davidson Ishmael, in 2013 Barbados ranked third in the world for cervical cancer incidents.

However, by 2018 that ranking dropped to 14th with a corresponding reduction in deaths during that period.

Mr. Ishmael gave the statistics while addressing the opening of the National Forum for NGOs on Non-Communicable Diseases.

Mr. Ishmael adds that work done by the National Registry played a crucial role in the decision to open a stroke unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital ten years ago.

He says recent findings from a 2023 assessment have shown that access to critical care including speech and occupational therapy has significantly reduced stroke-related deaths.
