Mindful of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Government will be conducting research this year to gauge the true scope of poverty in the country.
Minister of People Empowerment Kirk Humphrey shared the plans for the Enhanced Country Poverty Assessment during this morning’s post Cabinet press briefing.
He says best practice indicates poverty statistics should be updated every two years, but Barbados’ most recent stats were acquired in 2016 when 17.2% of households fell below the poverty line.
This year’s study will be done in conjunction with regional and international agencies.
The People Empowerment Minister also disclosed the results will help to shape policy decisions.
