Putting innovative ideas into motion

September 21, 2024

The University of the West Indies has always had innovative ideas but now needs to put them into motion to the benefit of all.

This is according to Pro-vice Chancellor and Principal of the Cave Hill Campus Professor Clive Landis who was speaking following the second iteration of the Cave Hill Innovate! 2024 Competition.

He says private sector investment is important in order to scale up.

This year participants were asked to develop projects that can either enhance the profitability of the UWI Cave Hill Campus or improve the operational efficiency of the campus in some way.

Top prize went to campus quest; second place was captured by the Caribbean Music Assessment Board; and the third place was won by UWI Afro-Caribbean Fashion and Art Academy.

The special prize this year was given to Bim Skin.

The team competition which was made up of teams involving two to five staff members, saw $60,000 made available to the top three teams to start the business activity.

Winners Camille Russell-Thornhill and Geralyn Walkes say their campus-based tour company offers customisable, immersive, gamified tour experiences to participants.

Team Lead Ms. Russell-Thornhill says following a number of hikes held by the campus for its 60th anniversary, some people expressed interest in a less passive form of touring.

And their tours are both historical and educational for the user.
