Plan to offer more elderly care training programmes

December 16, 2023

Government is committed to introducing programmes offering training in elderly care in all community centres across Barbados.

Word of this from Minister of Youth and Community Empowerment Charles Griffith who lamented the fact that this training is only being undertaken at a few centres at present.

Minister Griffith says with Barbados being dubbed an aged society it is extremely critical that this elderly care training is more widespread.

He made the remark recently at the end of a 12-week course on the Foundation of Elderly Care at the Horatio Cooke Sports Complex at Gall Hill in St. John.

During that presentation ceremony a number of elderly folk who participated in the programme received gift baskets.

They also had blood pressure checks from the health care providers on location.

Minister Griffith says such community programmes offer entry level experience to individuals interested in this health care specialty.

He says Government hopes to empower more communities by putting in place centre management committees to ensure community centres and pavilions remain accessible to the public for wholesome after-hour activities at all times.
