A registered dog charity is deeply concerned over the rising number of adoptable dogs being euthanised in Barbados.
Karen Whittaker, Founder and CEO of Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary who expressed this sentiment through an issued statement was responding to the recent reports of nearly 1,000 dogs euthanised by the Animal Control Centre in Barbados.
Ms. Whittaker emphasises the urgent need for collaborative solutions to address the underlying issues contributing to this crisis.
She says this tragic increase highlights the pressing need for comprehensive and compassionate strategies to tackle the root causes of stray animal populations in our communities.
Ms. Whittaker underscores the importance of collaboration between government agencies, animal welfare organisations, and the public to implement effective measures for animal welfare and population control.
The CEO of the animal sanctuary says the current, counterproductive process of Government compelling Ocean Acres to buy dogs at the Animal Control Unit needs to be revised.
Ms. Whittaker says Ocean Acres advocates for a system that incentivises cooperation rather than creating barriers and this would include waiving fees for dogs transferred from Animal Control to registered animal welfare organisations like Ocean Acres.
She’s also suggesting providing subsidies to cover the cost of care for animals in need.
Ms. Whittaker further emphasises the importance of education and awareness initiatives to promote responsible pet ownership and prevent pet abandonment.
