With news that US health authorities are closely monitoring a new COVID-19 variant, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. the Most Honourable Kenneth George is reassuring the island the Ministry of Health and Wellness will continue to monitor the Covid-19 situation internationally.
In a statement issued by the Barbados Government Information Service, Dr. George noted the most recent COVID-19 samples received from the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) have not raised any concerns among local health authorities.
He says Barbados’ COVID-19 hospitalisation rate also remains low, at less than five per cent occupancy.
The positivity rate remains between 25 and 30 per cent.
However, Dr George says there is no indication transmission rates have increased or that people are having adverse outcomes.
Members of the public meanwhile have been advised to protect themselves by masking up if they are in unsure situations, and to continue to protect individuals who are over age 65 as well as those who have chronic conditions from contracting COVID-19.
