No increase in poultry imports

August 13, 2024

The Agriculture Minister is refuting claims that imported chicken wings are adversely impacting local producers.

Minister of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security Indar Weir is stressing there has been no increase in poultry imports.

He was responding to suggestions Government’s decision to import chicken wings for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is severely affecting the operations of small farmers.

He has given the assurance the two containers of chicken wings imported by the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation ahead of the world cup have not impacted the local market.

Mr. Weir also says the price of chicken should be reduced if there is a glut on the market.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Gale’s Agro Products believes small farmers now have tons of homegrown poultry meat in cold storage because they estimated a much bigger demand for World Cup and Crop Over.

However, Mr. Gale says the poultry meat on cold storage will be needed in the coming months.
