Ministry enhancing surveillance for Mpox

August 15, 2024

Local health authorities are paying close attention to the outbreak of Mpox in Africa amid concerns it about its transmission to other countries.

The World Health Organisation has declared the upsurge of infectious disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a growing number of African countries in Africa a public health emergency of international concern.

Chief Medical Officer, the Most Honourable Dr. Kenneth George says that even though there are no cases of Mpox in Barbados, amid this development, the Ministry of Health is continuing to enhance its surveillance.

However, he says, doctors and port health have been placed on alert.

Appealing to members of the public to be vigilant at this time, Dr. George says the infectious and lethal strain of the disease is transmitted by close and intimate contact.
