Legislation governing policy described as a hindrance

September 30, 2024

Aspects of the current legislation governing the island’s Energy Policy, including that of the Intervenor, are being described as a hindrance to investment.

That’s according to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kerrie Symmonds.

Leading off debate in Parliament this morning on the new Electricity Supply Bill 2024, Minister Symmonds said the law it is meant to replace is repetitive and creates unnecessary barriers to the ease of doing business.

He says those aspects will be removed from the legislation as the country goes forward.

Mr. Symmonds says there must be a balance which provides the opportunity to move forward with the investment.

According to Minister Symmonds, the new legislation sets out the roles and responsibilities of all the key stakeholders.

He says it retains the Electricity Advisory Committee which advises the Minister to approve licences and assigns rights under the licence among other things.
