The Barbados Bar Association is calling for a review of the island’s older police stations.
Convenor of the Bar Association’s Criminal Law Committee, Marty Garnes, made the appeal during a press conference.
This follows concerns raised by the association after a cell phone was discovered in the room of a police station where an attorney had been consulting with a client.
The association is recommending there be soundproofed rooms designated specifically for attorney-client conversations.
Mr. Garnes says only the Hastings/ Worthing Station which was opened in 2020 has adequate facilities.
The committee is also recommending the only police officer that should be allowed in an attorney-client room is the officer tasked with dealing with suspects.
It suggests anyone else caught in the room should be penalised.
