Important historical documents lost in fire

Barbados has lost some important historical documents after fire struck at the Archives Department late last night.

Initial investigations by the Barbados Fire Service point to a lightning strike.

The Barbados Fire Service received a call of a structural fire at the Black Rock, St. Michael-based Archives Department close to midnight.

Divisional Officer Marlon Small credited quick action by fire officers for the saving of some documents.

Archives officials along with Minister of Home Affairs, Wilfred Abrahams and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with Responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight were among those at the scene.

Minister Abrahams says the Archives Department is important to Barbados.

He says a full investigation will be conducted.

Chief Archivist Ingrid Thompson say Block D was completely destroyed along with some important records.
