Gov’t seeking to reverse declining population

June 25, 2024

The Barbados Government has outlined its goals as it seeks to reverse its declining population.

Among them, increasing the population of people of working age.

Minister of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology, Marsha Caddle, says statistics from the 2021 census show the 55 to 59 age group makes up the largest portion of the population.

She was speaking during Debate on a resolution for Parliament to take note of the Barbados Population Policy 2023.

Ms. Caddle has made it clear the intention of the policy is not to call on people to have more children.

The policy document lists extending the categories of people entitled to citizenship and permanent residence, as one of the approaches to increasing the working population.

Ms. Caddle says at the appropriate time, the country will have to look at who gets to call themselves a Barbadian citizen.
