Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs Ryan Straughn has responded to the Auditor General’s Special Audit Report on the acquisition and construction of steel-framed housing units by the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Maintenance.
The report, laid in Parliament last month, highlighted over 23 million dollars in cost overruns for the construction of pre-fabricated steel-framed houses from China.
Minister Straughn says the increase in costs associated with the training, labour and construction generally, significantly contributed to the additional sums.
Particularly as it relates to the labour costs, he stresses that it was Barbadians who benefitted.
