Former NUPW General Secretary dies

Former General Secretary of the National Union of Public Workers, Denis Clarke has died.

Mr. Clarke who retired from the post in October 2014, gave over 40 years to the local trade union movement have joined the staff of the NUPW in 1974.

He was awarded a Barbados Service Star that same year for his contribution to the development of the island.

Current General Secretary of the NUPW, Richard Green, says Mr. Clarke was outstanding in the area of grievance handling with successful management of several workers’ disputes.

Former Deputy General Secretary of the NUPW, Derek Alleyne recalls Mr. Clarke was passionate about his work and was instrumental on many Government’s sub-committees which dealt with among other things, establishing performance appraisals as well as job reclassification.

The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados has also been paying tribute to the late trade unionist.

CTUSAB’s General Secretary Dennis de Peiza said they are saddened to learn of Mr. Clarke’s passing.
