The coconut industry has been included in the island’s plans to achieve national food and nutritional security.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security Terry Bascombe says the Ministry has identified coconuts – an all year round food source – as one of the priority tree crops.
He says the country has also made positive strides in a European Union funded project ‘Alliances for the Coconut Industry Development Expansion and Enhanced Support for the Caribbean’.
Mr. Bascombe provided insight into the project, which Barbados joined in September 2019, during a symposium at the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill on the Potential of the Coconut Industry and Sustainable Development.
He adds business opportunities are also being made across different sectors for coconut farmers.
