Flash Flood Warning in effect for western districts

August 12, 2024

The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the western districts of the island.

A Flash Flood Warning is issued when rapid flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.

The Met Office says localise showers will affect the Bridgetown area and western districts.

The presence of Potential Tropical Cyclone 5 has resulted in light wind speeds across the island.

Throughout this afternoon moderate to intense showers across western and some central districts will occur.

In addition, thunderstorm activity is likely to accompany this shower activity.

Possible Impacts

Runoff from higher elevations.

Soil erosion/land slippage on exposed or scarred land surfaces.

Water settlements on roads and fields.

Adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies (ponds etc.).

Large objects or debris from higher elevations become embedded within fast-moving water flows.

Flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads.

Delays on traffic routes with some roads being impassable or cut off in and out of minor towns.

The public is encouraged to monitor official sources for further updates.

This Flash Flood Warning was issued today August 12, 2024 and will be updated tonight at 6 p.m.
