Efforts on to tackle plastic pollution

June 27, 2024

An estimated 500 tonnes of single use and other plastics are sent to the landfill and dumped illegally across the island every month.

This disclosure from Minister of Environment and National Beautification Adrian Forde.

Addressing the launch of the National Action Plan to End Plastic Pollution in Barbados, he expressed concern Barbadians are continuing to dump plastic across the length and breadth of the island.

The National Action Plan is being spearheaded by the Solid Waste Management Programme to end plastic pollution in Barbados by 73% over the next ten years.

It’s predicted to reduce 47,013 tonnes of plastic waste from ending up on the land and in seas.

Mr. Forde says Barbados has taken the lead in the Caribbean by prioritising the development of this plan, ahead of a ratified United Nations Plastics Treaty.
