Deputy Prime Minister and MP for St. Michael South East Santia Bradshaw has sought to put to rest any speculation regarding a cheque for $7,500 that was among items stolen from her constituency office during a recent burglary.
According to Ms. Bradshaw some people have used social media to seek to apply a “sniff test” to the cheque, which was made out in her name and received from a professional services company.
However, Ms. Bradshaw says there is nothing unusual about it. She says the cheque for $7,500 represents a charitable contribution to the annual christmas hamper and food voucher programme in her constituency.
Ms. Bradshaw notes she has been spearheading this effort for several years now, and has been assisted by several businesses and business persons over the years. She says the programme also predates her becoming a Minister of Government.
She says she therefore strongly objects to the insinuation of there being anything untoward about a cheque being submitted to her office, and being deposited into an account from which funds are used to underwrite a charitable programme that assists thousands of families and households in St. Michael South East.
She also says the benefactor in this instance is not currently providing any product or service to the Ministry over which she presides.
The St. Michael South East MP says she is also aware that the said contributor has assisted several other charities and Parliamentarians this holiday season, in the coordination of their public assistance programmes.
She adds the proceeds of the cheque went to the people of her constituency and that she hopes that we have not reached the stage in Barbados where we would wish to discourage giving.
