Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley is urging Barbadians to remember their history, from the plantations to celebrating a half century of Crop Over, and beyond.
Recalling various aspects of the Festival over the years, Ms. Mottley says Barbadians have created a lexicon of festivities for all and sundry to enjoy, and will continue for another 50 years.
She made the comments shortly before declaring Crop Over open during the Digicel Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes in the heart of the City this evening.
A number of stalwarts were honoured, and Prime Minister Mottley praised them all for their contribution over the years.
She says wherever else the Festival goes and however it is packaged, it must never be forgotten where, why and how it began.
She urges all to never let Crop Over be described simply as a carnival, because it has always been more than a carnival of fetes for Barbados.
