Fire at a commercial building along the Mighty Grynner Highway has activated a formal HAZMAT (hazardous materials) response by Police and Fire personnel.
They are also canvassing the nearby residential area located downwind to warn and evacuate residents to avoid any smoke inhalation.
In a release, Police noted Operations Control was alerted by the Barbados Fire Service about the blaze around 5:49 a.m.
They were advised that the fire is suspected to be one where unknown chemicals are involved, therefore the formal HAZMAT response was activated.
CBC News understands the building is owned by Paradise Home and Beauty.
Currently, police personnel are redirecting both vehicular and pedestrian traffic away from the area.
Police say they will provide periodic updates on the situation.
