Call to consider how houses are built

July 8, 2024

A local disaster emergency official is stressing the importance of considering not only how homes are constructed, but also where they are built, in an effort to minimise the damage caused by severe weather.

Programme Officer with the Department of Emergency Management, Simon Alleyne, was a guest on the Current Affairs Programme, The People’s Business.

He was speaking against the background of coastline properties bearing much of the damage inflicted by Hurricane Beryl.

With over 400 people making use of emergency shelters during the passage of Beryl, Mr. Alleyne notes Barbadians appear to taking hurricane preparedness more seriously.

He also disclosed the DEM has received fewer damage reports than with Hurricane Elsa and Tropical Storm Tomas.
