With the International Decade for People of African Descent expected to come to a close in 2024, there is a strident call for a second decade to be declared.
The topic was one of many discussed during the recently concluded 2nd Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.
The Decade was declared to strengthen actions and measures to ensure the full realisation of the economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights of people of African descent, and their full and equal participation in society.
Barbados’ Ambassador to CARICOM David Comissiong, who participated in the forum, revealed it was decided not enough was accomplished and the present decade was not taken seriously.
Ambassador Commissiong was a guest on the Conversations on CARICOM segment of CBC TV8’s Mornin’ Barbados.
The four day session of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent produced many other conclusion and recommendations.
Ambassador Comissiong proposed the UN establish a special international tribunal to adjudicate reparations claims.
