BMS monitoring tropical wave

August 29, 2024

The Barbados Meteorological Services is closely monitoring the progress of a tropical wave located in the Central Tropical Atlantic near 38W or about 2250km east of Barbados.

The system is moving at 10-15mph in a west-northwestward direction.

The BMS says the latest model guidance is now in better agreement with some slow development from Saturday, August 31, 2024, as environmental conditions are expected to become marginally favourable as the feature tracks west to west-northwestward.

The wave is expected to affect Barbados from Monday, September 2, into Tuesday, September 3, 2024, and is forecast to bring moderate to heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms.

However, there are currently no warnings or watches in effect for Barbados.

Additionally, light winds are expected for the rest of the week into the weekend which will result in uncomfortable temperatures across Barbados.

The BMS says localised activity is likely across western and northwestern districts during the afternoons.

The public should note there is the possibility of flash flooding over the next couple of days as certain areas may become further saturated.

Any relevant watches or warnings will be issued if necessary.

The public is encouraged to monitor official sources for any updates regarding the wave.

This information statement will be updated tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. or sooner if conditions warrant.
