BMS continues to monitor tropical wave

August 30, 2024

Met officials continue to monitor the movement of a tropical wave that is expected to reach the Eastern Caribbean sometime Sunday night into Monday.

During that time, the Barbados Meteorological Services says moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity are likely.

At 11 a.m., the tropical wave was located in the Central Tropical Atlantic about one-thousand-780 kilometres east of Barbados.

The wave continues to move west-northwestward at 10- to 15 miles per hour.

There are no watches or warnings in effect for Barbados associated with the feature at this time.

According to the Met Office, the tropical wave is currently embedded within the monsoon trough.

Over the past 24 to 48 hours model guidance has been fluctuating in regards to the development of this system as it approaches Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

As a result, there remains some uncertainty within the forecast, however, any development of the system will be slow, as the current environment is not conducive to rapid development.

Barbadians have also been advised that light winds are forecast for the weekend and will result in uncomfortable temperatures across the island.

Additionally, localised activity is likely across the western and northwestern districts of the island during the afternoon.

Given that some areas may become further saturated, the potential for flash flooding is higher over the coming days.
