BDS provides update on drug supply challenges

June 3, 2023

There may be some relief on the way for Barbadians affected by challenges as it relates to the availability of some medications.

In a BGIS release, Director of the Barbados Drug Service (BDS), Maryam Karga-Hinds, provided an update.

One of the affected drugs is the steroid Prednisolone, used to treat various conditions including asthma and Long-COVID. Ms. Karga-Hinds says a 2nd supplier has been contacted following a number of delays in shipment from the contracted supplier. A shipment of this drug is now scheduled to arrive in two to three weeks and the BDS is also currently searching for readily available stock.

Another drug which has been in short supply is the prostate cancer drug Androcur (Cyproterone). The release notes manufacturers have been experiencing shortages with obtaining the raw materials, leading to the rationing of the medication to buyers. The Drug Service Director says a generic supplier has been contracted to fill the need, however the product has to be manufactured and the generic is not expected to be ready before the end of June. There is a limited supply on island.

Ms. Karga-Hinds also notes of recent, there have been significant challenges with Epilim, used in the treatment of epilepsy.

The local agent has indicated that small quantities of the 300 mg and 500 mg have been shipped, however, the 300 mg strength is scheduled for discontinuation by year-end. Ms. Karga-Hinds points out that this is not a product which can be easily interchanged and the Drug Service is actively looking for a replacement product.

She also shared that a shipment of Ventolin liquid, used to treat asthma, is en route to the island. She revealed that recently a quantity of this drug expired and had to be destroyed because of the lack of demand. Ventolin in tablet form is no longer on the Barbados national drug formulary.

Meanwhile as it relates to the anti-inflammatory drug Ibuprofen, a limited supply is available on island and should be available for sale soon.

Mrs. Karga-Hinds has expressed regret over any challenges experienced by the public due to the availability of medication. She says the Barbados Drug Service will continue to do all in its capacity to re-establish supply of the items that are out of stock.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness has also committed to updating the public with relevant information as it becomes available.
