There’s a move to reduce cases of seniors being taken advantage of by unscrupulous individuals.
It involves providing them with facilities to become technologically literate.
The Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) is creating that type of environment for its members with the opening of a business centre at its Hastings, Christ Church headquarters.
President Marilyn Rice-Bowen says amid concern about the exploitation of seniors, BARP determined in October 2021 a dedicated space should be made available for seniors to access the digital landscape.
She says a third of BARP’s membership has email addresses but no access to those emails.
Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Kirk Humphrey stresses better must be done to protect seniors, even though most of the issues surrounding older people are tied to family matters.
