Barbados commemorating life of Shirley Chisholm

September 15, 2024

Barbados will be paying homage to Shirley Chisholm for the centennial commemoration of her birthday.

Chisholm was born on November 30, 1924, in Brooklyn to immigrant parents from British Guiana and Barbados. She is the first African American woman in the US Congress, as well as the first female and African American to seek the nomination for President of the United States.

Minister in the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with Responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr Shantal Munro-Knight, says her legacy stands as an important marker for women. She adds that the activities planned are aimed at inspiring future generations.

Shirley Chisholm’s centennial commemoration activities include an ongoing social media campaign to reintroduce citizens to the late Chisholm; a Genealogy Marketplace, an art competition, a lecture series and a special lighting ceremony. The latter will see the Freedom Tower in the US being lit up simultaneously with the Shirley Chisholm Primary School.

Chairman of the Shirley Chisholm Committee, Rodney Grant, said that the initiative is part of the Government’s broader vision of how it memorialises people and builds national consciousness during the official launch.
