November 22, 2023

Barbados has warned the most common infections are at risk of not being treatable due to the resistance developed against medicines.

These medicines include antibiotics.

In a bid to garner support this World Antimicrobial Resistance Week, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, who is Chair of the Global Leaders Group on AMR hosted a global youth dialogue titled “Securing Our Future From Antimicrobial Resistance”.

The Barbadian leader reiterated during the forum AMR is a silent pandemic the world has been facing for years.

Prime Minister Mottley revealed every year, it contributes to almost five million deaths worldwide associated with drug resistant infections.

She stressed the economic impact of AMR is growing and if left unchecked can push millions into poverty.

Ms. Mottley says the time for action is now to create a healthy future for all.
