Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Dale Marshall, is calling for the CARICOM Arrest Warrant Treaty which was adopted by the regional bloc in 2017 and ratified by the Government of Barbados in 2018, to be implemented by all of CARICOM as a matter of urgency.
This, as Government seeks a resolution to a situation in which a High Court Judge in Trinidad accused police in Barbados of abducting Trinidadian Brent Thomas.
Thomas was arrested in Barbados and extradited to Port of Spain upon request from CARICOM IMPACS, to face criminal charges.
Mr. Marshall says the Government of Barbados is willing to accept any decision made in the matter pending an investigation, and is calling for full ventilation by all parties.
The Attorney General made the remarks today in the Lower House as he gave a Ministerial Statement regarding the controversy.
He admitted that no official request was made for the extradition of Mr. Thomas from Barbados.
However, he noted that the use of the term abduction or kidnapping by the court attributed to Barbados police in the situation was unfortunate, as according to him there was no criminal intent by the Police Service, which was merely assisting a sister CARICOM island.
Here is Attorney General Dale Marshall’s full Ministerial Statement.
