Adolescents are being urged to ‘Rethink Your Drink’ in an effort to stem the spread of diabetes.
Marketing Administrative Assistant of the Maria Holder Diabetes Centre for the Caribbean, Hilary Forde says it’s easy for younger people to reach for a sugar-sweetened beverage, but they were on a mission to change that behaviour.
She says according to a 2015 Health of Nation study, one in five adults is diabetic, but there are a lot of cases that went undiagnosed.
Ms. Forde says while there is a high number of cases in older people, with more cases cropping up in younger people, there are no readily available statistics on diabetes affecting younger people.
She says the Centre had only just started pushing the message of a holistic approach to health to younger people, but there has been a change in the older demographic within their clinic.
