Danish dairy farmers are facing the world’s first carbon emissions tax on livestock.
They’ll have to pay nearly 100 dollars per cow to help offset the planet-heating emissions the animals produce.
Government officials in Denmark agreed to introduce the tax, which means new levies will be in effect on livestock by the year 2030.
According to the United Nations, farm animals accounted for roughly 12% of global emissions in 2015.
This decision comes months after European farmers protested the European parliament with complaints about environmental regulation.
