Two people were killed, including the 21-year-old driver of a vehicle that was being pursued by police, in Guyana on Wednesday.
Christopher Bhagwandat of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and his 16-year-old girlfriend, Sheereda Persaud of Bath, West Coast Berbice (WCB) died instantly in the accident that involved a police vehicle, two motorcars and a truck.
Police in a brief statement, hours after the accident, said that three police officers were injured and were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
One of Bhagwandat’s relatives who spoke with reporters at the scene said he had travelled to Berbice to pick up his girlfriend to celebrate his mother’s birthday.
Media reports said that he had been stopped at a roadblock and sped off when asked to produce his driver’s licence.
They said the police vehicle was chasing the motorcar when, in the vicinity of the Mahaica Bridge, the police vehicle collided with another vehicle and as a result, the car crashed into another causing the driver to lose control and slam into a truck.
